Can pregnant women fast during ramdan? - Dr. Teena S Thomas

Fasting and Ramadan is a big topic of controversy all along. Basically there are many studies into it which say that mostly there will be no effect, but there are some that says that there are health issues to it. Islamic leaders say that fast if you are healthy. So the basic thing is fasting is required or done only when the basic parameters in pregnancy are perfectly normal that is, there is no growth restriction in the baby, there is no history of anemia or other medical disorders in the baby , in the mother, or there are no associated features with the mother say that the pregnancy is going to be affected with the diet or the health issues can happen because of fasting. If such things are there, definitely fasting is not an option. But if the patient is perfectly healthy, the weight gain in pregnancy has been good, the interval growth has been very good, there is no other associated medical disorders then fasting has not shown to cause low birth weight babies during delivery of the baby and hence, but proper care has to be taken that sufficient amount of liquids have to be taken all along, enough fruits to avoid constipation, because when these patients go into fasting they can have various small effects like nausea and headache which has to be tolerated well and taken care of .Dehydration is one thing which has to be taken care of and avoided very well, so, almost 1.5 to 2 litres of fluids has to be taken when they are not fasting. So such things are to be taken care of, enough vegetables and all this has to be supported, if all these are done, then healthy pregnant can go ahead. There are various parameters they also look into but otherwise eat and drink well is the basic norm in pregnancy.
