STORYLINE

A group of Israeli mothers and their newborn babies have been forced to take shelter in a hospital basement after the building was hit by Katyusha rockets on Monday.

The rockets struck the third floor of the Zeev hospital near the town of Safed in northern Israel.

"We heard the Katyusha (rockets) coming, we heard her falling, and then all the glass was broken. It was very, very frightening moment for all of us. So we took the mothers, we called all the mothers and all the babies and we started to bring them down to the first level which is very, very protected, and it has no window to the outside," Zeev hospital's head nurse, Eti Anbar said.

Only a handful of colourful balloons now decorate the white-painted windowless basement which is packed with mothers and their babies.

Anbar said some of the women gave birth prematurely after going into labour when the rockets struck.

But she said all mothers and babies were in good health.

"Everyone was born in time. They don't need any intensive care," she said.

Towns in northern Israel have been hit by several Hezbollah rocket attacks amid increasing violence between Israeli troops and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
