Is it okay to eat a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?

So some people ask me, "Is it okay to eat a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?" And it is absolutely okay. It just requires a little bit of extra work on the part of mom. When you don't have any meat in your diet, you miss some of the essential amino acids, vitamin B12, adequate amounts of iron that you would normally get in a carnivorous or meat-eating diet. The other difficulty with eating a vegetarian diet is that it is difficult to get enough calories, just because when you're pregnant, you do require more calories than you do whenever you're not pregnant. So you also have to keep that in mind whenever you're choosing what food it is that you put in your body. A lot of the dietary deficiencies can be replaced with fortified soy products, lots of dairy products are usually good, enough calcium, you can also get other products that have additional amino acids. If you still feel like you're somewhat deficient dietarily and you can talk about this with your physician, then we can have you talk to a dietician to further educate you about other food choices during your pregnancy.
