What is the importance of iron in pregnancy diet? - Edwina Raj

Iron is an important nutrient during pregnancy. It should be taken regularly to maintain haemoglobin levels.
Green leafy vegetables, dry fruits, dates, nuts, soya bean are good sources of iron which can be included in the diet.
Generally poor iron stores is seen in pregnant women because of following strict vegan diet.Vegetarians need balance intake of iron with vitamin C so that there is good iron absorption in the body. All the vegetarian sources would have non haem that is indirect source of iron. But when it comes to non veg sources it is the direct haem source which can be easily absorbed.Vegetarians having poor iron stores should include vitamin C rich foods like citrus foods, cabbage, capsicum, sprouts which will improve iron absorption..
