How to Stop Breastfeeding at Night
There are many different reasons parents wean their baby off of breastfeeding at night. Sometimes mothers need to stop breastfeeding for medical reasons, or perhaps you want to encourage your baby to sleep through the night. Whatever the reason, gradually weaning your baby off of breastfeeding at night can be difficult for both the mother and the baby. It is important to be patient and to remember that breastfeeding isn’t just about nutrition, it is also a source of comfort for your baby.
Part 1 Adjusting Your Daytime Routine
1 Do some research and ask people for advice.
2 Nurse more during the day.
3 Minimize distractions during daytime feedings.
4 Watch your baby for feeding cues.
5 Start introducing solid foods.
6 Nurse often in the hours leading up to bedtime.
Part 2 Weaning Off Night Nursing
1 Start getting the baby ready for bed early.
2 Feed your baby one last time before bed.
3 Get your baby used to other nighttime comforts.
4 Make your breasts less available.
5 Try alternative sleeping arrangements.
6 Be patient.
Part 3 Caring for Yourself
1 Expect to feel mixed emotions when weaning your baby from nightly feedings.
2 Massage the breasts if you have breast discomfort.
3 Pump extra milk from the breasts at night.
4 Dress comfortably.
5 Sleep when you can.
